The luxurious Samphire Hotel on Rottnest Island required effective shade to protect guests without compromising the aesthetic appeal of its location.
Samphire Hotel is located on Rottnest Island – presenting both a logistically and environmentally challenging site. After consultation with Soltex, our solution was the installation of four Shaderunner® Retractable Shade Sails equating to 220m2 in scale. This solution meant that effective shade would protect guests attending the sand bar on even the hottest days – while also being able to be retracted back to enjoy the coastal views and night stars.
With the project being at a coastal location, it was extremely important that any fixings and parts used in the design and installation were marine-grade stainless steel. The integration of the shade sails into a purpose built timber clad frame and looping effect of the fabric contributed to the luxe resort style feel and fit seamlessly into the hotel aesthetic. As each of the retractable shade sails was covering a large area, upgraded hardware had to be used to be able to sustain high winds and prevailing weather experienced on the island. The Soltex team coordinated the transportation of both the large sails and scaffolding equipment required to erect the shade sails 6m high, which included permits from Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) to be able to drive the trucks on the island.
